The president has been spying on us. Well, not me, i hope. He has been evesdropping on conversations that are associated with terrorists. How he knows? He doesn't, he suspects. All this is without a warrant(spell it right for yourself if it isn't). The congress appearently authorized this by voting for the war. War in Iraq. War on terrorism has yet to be declared officially. As of yet it is only a political catch-phrase. You cannot wage a catch-phrase, but you can use it to push an agenda.
I used to support our president. not now. Even if this spying thing turns out to be leagal, it is so wrong. Our entire country is based on not supposing someone is guilty. To spy on a citizen, he/she HAS to be suspected. The president has said that national security trumps personal liberties, in not so many words. The hundred dollar man, Ben Franklin, said that those who would give up freedom for security, deserve neither.
I think they will not get it either. They will give up the freedom to trade it for security. But the biggest enemy a people can have are thos who wish to dominate. They are just as likely to live in a country as out. Without personal freedom, those in country have no restraints from using the government to dominate the people. We still have most of our freedom, and this is a struggle here, in other countries, it has proved to be an impossible struggle. Domination takes a stronger will than subjection, so dominators are bound to win eventually. This means that without a system to stop them, that is, without guarenteed personal freedom, the masses will be dominated more often than not.
Our freedom is diminishing. It is only a matter of time. Or society is failing. like Rome did, and Greece and Russia and Mongolia and Babylon...etc I'm not elequent today, but you get what i'm saying even if you disagree i hope.

tough balance...SECURITY...FREEDOM
Of course we will never have complete security. WE love our freedom...but of course we never have complete freedom. We free to think and feel as we like...but in our country and any country we are not free to do what will bring harm or terror to others.
I still support the president. Our system is set up so he cannot dominate us. There are those great "checks and balances" and it sounds like they are beginning to work.
good thoughts

You could say in some ways it is the JOB of the president to use all the tools he can to prevent terror. His is the executive (the law enforcement) branch of the government. Not that all of those tools are legal. It is the job of the legislature and the judicial branch to rein him in.
It looks like they all hate each other, but that is the political game they play to manipulate us into voting for them. In reality, they are all fighting within a system they understand, and the system is designed to allow only incremental, well-monitored change.
I think Bush has done some pretty outrageous things, and I'm surprised he's gotten away with as much as he has, but he's playing his part in a bigger system.
That said, so was Hitler. Very few people have power without the consent of the people. Some are just better at manipulating the people. Of course, there's always a limit. Hitler met his when the Allies resolved to stop him. Sharon has met his, despite the support of his people and the world. We can only hope Bush's limit doesn't create a backlash against conservatism in general.
You're gonna think I'm dumb, but here goes anyway...I think it's fine. The press makes it sound like he's spying on everyone and anyone, without any cause. But he's said that the people with their phones being tapped are suspected affiliates of terrorists, and only them.
I'm sure the people can't bring unwarranted things against people whoa dmit to thievery or even murder in their own home, it owuld get thrown from court as illegally obtained material. That stuff can be surpressed, and gets supressed all the time.
And if I can't go off what the president said, and take many people's word for it, then Ican't believe anything. Because most of the stuff we hear is "hear-say" and anyone with an agenda can make things up.
And if he is, at least he's admitted its happening, and not doing it in secret. How many other presidents have done this kind of stuff and gotten away with it? It's not like Bush is running ofr a third term and gonna use it to further his politcal career.
Well, actually, he only admitted he was doing it because someone ratted him out. He's angry because it was supposed to be done in secret. He wanted terrorists to think they could safely talk about their plans on the phone. Now the cat's out of the bag, and they won't be so open about their targets and methods.
Didn't Jesus say that people do things "in the darkness" because they are evil, and all those things will be brought to light? Why would a Christian President think this was the right way to do stuff?
Too many people assume that because this is how the system works, it's OK to keep doing it. Some systems are just wrong. Any system that operates "in the dark" is automatically suspect in my book.
And that's what the legislature needs to sort out.
I blame the schools, they need more funding. That will fix all our problems.
Great idea, Ben! More money for schools! If we indoctrinate people thoroughly enough they won't even EXPECT freedom. They'll think freedom means you do whatever you're told and you pay for it on April 15th and have no say in how the money's spent. That's freedom. I think we could redefine SECURITY, too, if we spend a little more money on "education"
